Rum Runner's Sport Fishing Charters in Juneau Alaska
Go Salmon Fishing!
Our salmon runs start in early May with the returns of our large breeder Kings (Chinooks). These are the largest of our salmon and can weigh over 40 lbs. Feeder Kings are around the whole season but must be 28” or longer to keep. This season King Salmon opens for retention June 1st. To retain Kings you’ll need a King Salmon Stamp (see FAQ page)
The Pink or "Humpy" Salmon start showing up in mid-June, these are the smallest of our salmon, 3 to 6 lbs, but are real fighters if caught on ultra light gear.
Along with the Pinks, the Chum or "Dog" Salmon start to make their appearance. The Dog Salmon can be one of the toughest salmon to land and are excellent for the smoker or BBQ.
In the middle of July our Coho or "Silver" Salmon start their runs. These salmon are surface fighters, making magnificent jumps when hooked, and are some of the best eating salmon. Click here to see our Fishing Seasons Chart.
King Salmon fishing begins in early May. Large breeder Kings can exceed 40 pounds, while feeder Kings must reach at least 28 inches to be retained. Pink and Chum salmon runs arrive in mid-June, with pinks typically running 3 to 6 pounds. Coho (Silver) salmon arrive in mid-July, providing vigorous light-tackle action through late summer.
Rockfish May (or anytime)
The Alaska Rockfish is on the upswing and can be found in great abundance along the underwater cliffs in our fjords. I highly recommend fishing for these guys, especially in May and June while salmon fishing might be a bit slow as the Kings start to show up. If you have children in your party, Rockfish will keep them busy.
Alaska Rockfish is a tasty, mild white meat fish. Fantastic as fillets or in fish tacos. Try this Rockfish Taco recipe.
Halibut Fishing
Halibut are some of the best tasting fish that can be found. Halibut fishing can be hard work but well worth the effort. For best luck, halibut fishing should be done during our smaller tides. The occasional Rockfish, Pacific Cod, and Lingcod can also be caught on these deep-water, rocky crags and ridges.
We offer All-Day, 6-hour, and half-day Halibut Fishing Tours. Due to the nature of halibut fishing, we recommend a longer excursion. Introduced this year is a Halibut Stamp to retain Halibut (see our FAQ page). Currently, to protect stock, most Tuesdays will be closed to Halibut retention.
